SE4A Partnership!

Computer SuperCenter is so excited to embark on a new journey. We have the ability and opportunity through Stamford Education 4 Autism, and the wonderful work of Robin Portanova and the team, to give children on the spectrum a chance to work and help prepare them for a rich full life. Its kind of scary knowing that we can actually touch lives and help people in such a way that speaks to our strengths in the business community as well as the Autism community.

NAS Array Failed with 1 out of 4 drives. An IT person attempted to rebuild the array by hot-swapping the failed drive with a brand new one and was unsuccessful. Watch our lead Data Recovery Engineer, Ruben Delgado, work to recover this customers data!

The Click of Death!

The infamous click of death invaded the hard drive of one of our customers iMacs. Take a listen to this particularly violent clicking noise that is a result of platter damage or corrupted heads. Our Data Recovery Lab is in the process of replacing the damaged heads. After the head exchange we will perform the imaging process and make a copy of the hard drive onto a healthy drive. Imaging can take anywhere from a day to three weeks depending on the amount of data that is on the drive. Remember, don't attempt a recovery yourself and know that any attempt to recover data can result in more damage if you do not have the expertise!

Crash and Burn

Two Types of Crashed Drive Scenarios:
Recoverable Drives

If media damage is minor, a dropped drive can be copied successfully.  Drives are often recoverable if damage is found in unused areas or in parts of the drive that do not contain important client data.  Recovery is not often 100% successful in most cases but it is still possible. If, however, there is significant damage on one or more platter surfaces only a partial recovery is possible. Some files can be retrieved by types without their file names or original folder locations, also known as raw recovery.

Unrecoverable Drives

Not all data recovery is recoverable, data recovery is considered to be a salvage operation and more so in dropped or jolted drives.  A raw recovery otherwise known as partial recovery is when data can be retrieved by their types (i.e. files without their file names or original folder locations).

Different Modes of Hard Drive Failure
Failure: Immediate & total, progressive or limited.
Common Hard Drive Failures
Electrical failure, firmware failure, mechanical failure, bad platter area, logical failure.
Symptoms of Common Hard Drive Failures
Electrical failure: Shows no sign of function,  clicking sounds, disk knocking as motor fails to spin.
Firmware Failure: Drive powers up, not recognized by computer, powers up with random characters, freezes during booting up.
Mechanical failure: Clicking and grinding sounds.
Bad platter area: Unable to access folders or files that are visible, Constant Cyclic Redundancy errors
Logical failure: Virus infection, file system corruption, operating system malfunction, accidental deletion.

Cyber-Security Risks, Beware!

We get lots of cases where customers have had their data and computer compromised. Here are some basic pointers we'd like our customers to be aware of in any event.

1) Weak passwords are still an issue: Using all the same or similar passwords for all accounts is a huge weakness in hacking. Hacking one account transitions to interception of all accounts.

2) If you are using anti-virus software keep it up to date as well as overall operating systems.
Here are some best security suites for 2015 per PCMag's 2015 Review: Bitfender Total Security (2014), Norton Internet Security (2014), Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Complete (2014), Kaspersky Internet Security (2014), McAfree Internet Security 2014.

3) Educate yourself on authenticity of requests via e-mail and contact the company directly. You'd be surprised to realize most are scams.

4) URLs that are missing a few letters, a different domain than the original site can replicate a site you know and deceive you, grabbing all of your information.

5) Scan your e-mail. Do not automatically download attachments.

6) Don't post personal information, as this allows hackers to decode information to enter your computer.

7) Don't click links from unknown senders either through e-mail or mobile.

What to Expect from Computer SuperCenter...

We know that hard drive failures are the last thing you would want, so we want to make the process easy for you.

What we need to know in order to help you timely and efficiently is to tell us:

What operation system was used with the device?
What led to its failure? What were the symptoms?
What data is absolutely important to recover?
What have you done to try and recover the data?
Is there anything else we need to know (i.e., time sensitivity, deadlines)?

Once recovery is complete, the information will be transferred onto the least expensive suitable external device (price usually ranges from $15-$99).
Enclosures containing the hard drive may be damaged during evaluation
All device services will void manufacturer warranty.
Customer's receipt must be shown to claim item(s) left for service.
Pricing will depend on the severity of the issue:
  • Corrupted and/or Deleted Files, $299.
  • Degraded Drive, $520.
  • Electronic Repair, $720.
  • Firmware Repair, $999.
  • Mechanical Failure, $1,500-2,500.
